You can tell what I read at work, can't you?

two posts in one hour- shocking.

Turns out the founder of wikipedia participated with the NY Times to keep a wikipedia entry false (well, not updated).
A reporter was kidnapped by the taliban, and every time this info was added to his wiki entry, it was removed.

Oh woes! Wikipedia is deliberately inaccurate about stuff!

I guess the fact that wikipedia top brass were involved is a bit surprising, but really...

and this is why you shouldn't consider wikipedia a valid source.

Wikipedia and NYT conspire to edit reporters entry

the next update

so thoughts on stuff since my last update-

1)- hey wannabepunk guy on the thursday train last week- when your girlfriends iPod is loud enough for us to all hear the song she is smirking to is "its not fair" the rest of the train smirks at you- well at least all those school girls are tittering and gesturing.

2)- So I agreed to be the Story Teller for vampire in the camarilla, shortly before eyecon.
participated in the running of the eyecon game, it seemed fun enough, so I kept at it.

then the big reset button thing happened. and I've spent more time online in the last fortnight than I had in the last 4 months prior to it, dealing with emails from cammies wanting more cheese.
a product of which I keep a strictly limited supply.
3)-Then last weekend we had the Premium Weekend. which was a cam event where we ran a bunch of games in a slightly swankier venue.
it caused a lot of running around and work on my part, and a not sleeping for almost a full week- I'd goaled at a full week to get everything I needed done (having last woke up at 11am Monday) but succumbed to peer pressure and got 4 hours sleep on friday night, causing even more hecticness, as I fell 4 hours behind schedule, and was only just prepped in time for the game, having worked on props while playing the death of werewolf.
Vampire went fairly well, the blood draw took too long, so the game started kinda slow, but otherwise things went well- the tentacles erupting out of herbies shirt while he writhed around in pain on the ground was excellent, other wacky antics abounded, most of the players seemed entertained.
then that night, after hanging at the pub for social drinks with the players, went home to start cooking for the changeling game on sunday- peeling potatoes and chopping vegetables mostly, plus Rachel made cupcakes. got to be about 430 am, then foolishly overslept till 10, barely leaving the time to cook the soups and bread and get to game. we got in 20 mins late, but other people were also late, so it worked out OK. people liked rachels food, also my food, it was also a fun game, players had a good time, Pony and Herbie yelled at people, fun was had.
now the weekend is over, and I got a long sleep in.
rest for a few days, next work day is thursday- to skip or not to skip. that is the question.

gothest overtime ever.

So its 9pm and Im still at work, 11 hours after I started.
why you ask?
why are you missing midweek geek? and is it the same reason you were at work till 1am yesterday?
why?

because I need to make the black blacker.

yesterday afternoon we switched one production line from making N231 carbon black (a relatively light black) to N234 carbon black (our second blackest black, after N134). I stayed back to test the first samples for tint (blackness), because I have the latest hours of any tech, so me staying back = the least overtime to pay. There were nozzle problems and assorted dramas so we didn't get the first sample till 8pm.

it wasn't black enough. So the workers modified the input and we tested and retested.
still not enough. I eventually gave up and went home.

I got in today to discover the problem still unsolved, and as quittin time got closer I was told if the black wasn't black enough I'd have to stay back again to try and get it blacker.
well low and behold if its still merely pitch-midnight black, rather than the black black we are looking for, and with little sign of improvement.

sigh, I am not looking forward to cycling home at 1 am.
the lack of streetlights and my bikelights dead battery mean a long dark lonely ride in the cold night air witth a high likelyhood of stacking it in one of the many potholes on our awful road.

plus I've still got stuff to write for eyecon, so Im probably not sleeping tonight.
I may have to sleep through much of eyecon.

Calendarmath

SO something on the radio jogged my brain and memory this week and I thought I should share.

Last week americans (well american nerds) got to celebrate an excellent holiday-
the square root of christmas.
as in- to the US xmas is 12.25
1225 is 35 squared.
so march the 5th (3.5 in US dates) is the square root of christmas.

1) this is excellent.
2) sadly we have no equivalent (the square root of 2512 is 50.1198563445666711...

but it made me think (not very hard) about other mathy dates that work for our date style.

mayday is the square root of my birthday (or my birthday is mayday squared)

the 19th of june is april fools day squared (the ultimate prankening. Be warned)

new years squared is the 12th of jan.

there are plenty of other mathed holidays for nerdy celebration.

additionally next year we have the big fear approaching- the day robots destroy us all.

many people looked for signs of the devil on 6.6.6
positive people looked for signs of jesus on 7.7.7
but the big one is 10.10.10
Why you ask?
because 101010 is 42 in Binary.
on this day the computers will finally figure it all out, and launch there inevitable war of annhilation against us
actually next year has 9 binary days, but I feel that 10.10.10 is the best of them.

thus ends my brief diversion into calendarmath

cause Lord Smeg says so

1. Make a list of 5 things you can see without getting up.
Clix, CDs, Books, empty boxes, batman.

2. What is the last movie you watched?
Watchmen. Its OK, but overhyped. 3.5 out of 5.

3. What are you wearing now?
hawaiian shirt, jeans, sneakers

4. What's your occupation?
Science (sadly no ! yet, but one day)

5. The best thing to happen to you as of late?
umm...
...umm...
lounging in bed snackin and watching JL was fun?
im far to binary to quantify best.

6. Do you consider yourself a good friend?
usually. Occasionally I question the idea, mostly after something goes wrong.
right now I do though.

7. What is one word you would use to describe yourself?
I almost wrote AWESOME!
I almost wrote a few other bad gag lines, like James. or Me.
but Im going with Blasé.

8. What's your current fandom/obsession/addiction?
I've got a few, but I think my major obsession is still probably clix.

9. What was the last thing you ate today?
Mars bar. bought it bout a month ago and forgot about it. found it on the dining table few moments ago.

10. What would your perfect day consist of doing?
?
chillin with my friends? nice food/drinks, games n stuff to entertain us.
something like that I guess.

11. What websites do you always visit when you go online?
hotmail. HCrealms. I try to LJ and Facebook too.

12. What was the last thing you bought?
groceries.

13. What are you listening to right now?
keystrokes.

14. What do you think about before you go to bed at night?
what time i plan on getting up the next morning

15. What was the last CD you bought?
hmm... I haven't bought a CD in years.
probably the decemberists. Or if PC game CDs count then some form of SIMS thing for Rachel.

16. What is your favourite weather, and why?
slight overcast, not raining/likely to. doesn't presure you into doing/not doing things, just nice friendly weather able to support whatever activity decision you make.

17. Dogs or cats?
Dogs. easily.

18. What is the one single wish for life?
is this supposed to be "what is YOUR one single wish for life?" that makes more sense- though is similarly hard for me to answer. I thik as written the answer is probably success/survival. so I'll just go with success (in general or in everything) as my personal choice.

19: What is your biggest regret in life?
regret is for people who are introspective.
I rarely regret things for more than a few moments.
right now I regret nothing.

19. If you could change one or more of societies rules/laws/beliefs, what would you change and why?
as a straight white male society treats me pretty good. so to pick a semi random answer for this question...
god. the whole religeon thing has done some good historically, served a few important purposes (to my eye) but the big gain it gave us is one TV seems to do better now, and without the historical inertia dilemma (that being unreasoning prejudices), so I'd be happy in an atheist society.

20. What's one of your favourite things to do?
play.

Tag?
I don't pay enough attention to who already tagged who, so anyone who wants to can claim I tagged them. If your answers are interesting enough I'll edit you in as someone I tagged.

Fictional Characters Meme

1. Comment on this post.
2. I will give you a letter.
3. Think of 5 fictional characters and post their names and your comments on these characters in your LJ.

sim_james has given me the letter Q. At first it seemed like a tough one but after a few minutes thought I had way more than 5 characters, so I refined my list further to only include Geniuses (or more accurately genii) or characters who are otherwise much more intelligent/competant than the other characters in their respective mediums.

So i'm skipping over Quicksilver, Quickdraw McGraw, Quigley, Quetzalcoatl (and his hideous movie Q-the winged serpent) Q(street fighter) and Q(next gen) and moving on to-

Querl Dox (of the legion of superheroes) aka Brainiac 5-
In comics he’s the legion of superheroes member most likely to turn evil for five issues then become good again with little to no repercussions for his attempts to destroy/enslave the universe, not to mention the one most likely to disrespect anyone they meet just one general principal (he’s the resident hypergenius) while still being considered a stand up guy by the universe at large and that kind of spin control makes him one of the better legionnaires. not my favourite but definately in the top 5.

Dr Quentin Q Quinn (from Sea lab 2021)-
While multiple PHD’s is impressive in any circumstance, he may well also be the only person in sealab to have a degree at all, which makes it even more so. Certainly he is the only person to display real competence, his only really questionable decision has to be staying on the explosion prone sealab (and maybe having sex with bizarro-debbie. maybe). Dr Quinn is the straight man to the rest of the crew for most of the jokes, screaming outrage at the idiocy that surrounds him.

Quinn Mallory (of Sliders)–
Invented a truly fantastic dimension hopping device, then spent 90% of the following episodes being remarkably stupid with it, rather than trying to solve the groups problem rationally. I really enjoyed this show back in the nineties, but subsequent viewings have failed to truly last the test of time. Never the most interesting character in the show, (q seems to be both the number of genii and second placers) but it was pretty much a star vehicle for Jerry O’Connell. Frankly the show lost it long before Quinn (mallory) got switched out for (quinn) Mallory but his departure spelled the final coffin nail for the show.

Q (of James Bond films)–
The head of MI6’s technical department and inventor of many of the great bond gadgets. Looking back at some of the gadgets bond was given in the old days is often worth a laugh- the watch communicator that gave bond messages by printing out label-maker strip messages is one of my favourites, a long list of such can be found here. Played in most of the movies by Desmond Llewelyn, who outlasted many bonds and M’s and was given a special send off for his final film in respect of his long service. Frankly inventor of awesome/ridiculous spy technology has got to be one of the best jobs in existence- especially with a crew of minions to complete any boring parts of the testing phases/construction, certainly I’ve always wanted his job more than Bond’s.

Queen Etherea (of the Venture Brothers) aka Lady Au Pair, Dr Girlfriend, Dr Fiance, Dr Mrs The Monarch, and countless other hench-names-
the sexy lady with the exceptionally masculine voice is not actually a genius but is one of the few truly competent people in the ventureverse. If it weren’t for being in love with the monarch she could probably have succeeded at real large scale evil. All the guys in the show either want her, or are disturbed by her deep, deep voice. Like half the list tends to play the “straight man” to the rest of the cast, but is occasionally kind of crazy too.

Turns out its been like two days since I upset someone.

There has been significant talk/ rants about discrimination on my friends list recently.
and since I don't post often enough, I feel like saying a few things myself, hell I might make a habit of just talking about what other people have said/ misquoting for comic effect, or would that be too nasty?

Firstly, I have noticed that many people believe that only commonwealth nations participate in the commonwealth games. this is an egregious error.
there are non-commonwealth countries who participate. Every example I know of are former commonwealth countries, who have said- F**k off, we don't want to be in this whole empire bulls**t, but can we still come to the fun and games?
a minor nitpick, but still, important.

secondly on discrimination.
it is inevitable.
many people like to use a different word when the discrimination is "positive". I don't. Yes there is such thing as positive discrimination (abstudy comes to mind) but it is still discrimination.

Speaking as a straight white middleclass male I have felt the sting of discrimination myself.

the term "breeder" is a term used to insult/discriminate against straights by the queer community.
I've even personally been harassed (physically) by gay people who were using the word (although I find those three to be an extreme deviation from the norm, most of whom would never do such to my face, if they felt inclined to be hatin')

there are many terms to insult /discriminate against white people- whitey, cracker and snowfake come to mind.
And I have been harassed by aboriginals for being a "whitey" who "took over our country". A beligerence I realise I'll be told is caused by socio-economic factors, but finding a why isn't the same as an excuse (sadly this kind of distrust/hatin' seems more endemic, but I choose to believe I have a poor sample set).

I have certainly been harassed by feminists for not being helpful enough, and being a cog that allowed the system to keep women down.
also for my assertion that chivalry is a form of sexism (certainly its based in it) and that if it is "dead" it was killed (more like seriously wounded) by the women's rights movement
(while the first kind of harassment is ridiculous, I accept the second as being at least somewhat valid)

not to mentions christians hastling atheists (and vice versa).

young people hassling old people (and vice versa)

and any and all major social divisions hassling the other side of the coin (and vice versa)

Everyone gets discriminated against for their choices. EVERYONE.

I know I've been in many situations where me/ my friends have been asked to do a particular task "because you're a man". I barely ever find this problematic, but I know of people who do.
there are reams and reams of complaints about people being assigned tasks because of stereotypes about their race/sex/religeon/orientation. but it should not be forgotten that this affects everyone.

some people may get it more often than others, and they often act (perhaps unwittingly) as though this invalidates the discrimination suffered by those who get it less frequently. This dismissiveness only contributes to the seperation and emotiveness of the issue.

Some people have been insulted for "making assumptions", and not understanding, but amusingly to me they have only been insulted by people who are in doing so, making assumptions and not understanding- see earlier statement about inevitability. Happily for the most part these people will get over their indignation, and not care about the arguement within a few weeks.

As for the social inappropriateness of straight, white or male pride, this is just a sad fact.
one can not say they have any of these things without being publically decried as/seeming to be, a crackpot/evil/bigotted/insulting word. It remains possible for a straight/white/male person to be proud of this fact without being a bigot, they just can't say it in non-conservative public. (just as it remains possible for non straight/white/male people to have pride and it to be completely about bigotry). And yes as identified by others this is because the phrase has been inexoribly linked to cracked/evil/insulting word people, much like the swastika, formerly a positive image has been inexoribly linked with nazism, and backward worn baggy pants are inexorably linked to Kriss Kross. So yes we can't have parades/games/ whatever. Happily we don't need to display our community, since everyone else lives in it, and if you feel like you need an event that only contains folks who are like/understand you, a) get some damn backbone whiner, and b) go to most public events, where the relative minority of those "different" from you is only slightly less disproportionate than at "minority friendly" events (where despite statements of openness, the disproportion is often significantly bigger- not that this is explicitly the fault of said minority communities).

NOTE-
many people may wish to say that this post is all "assumptions" or based on flawed understanding. Some of it may even be (certainly my point about the commonwealth games is accurate). however since this is the stance taken by the other recent posts on this issue (if you don't know what Im talking about, then be happy) I feel it doesn't invalidate my point.

In conclusion-
yeah you/ your friend is discriminated against. Take heart in that this is one of those few things we all have in common.

A tale of two cons

So last weekend was the double con hit.
Sydcon and Conclave, and scurrying back and forth between them.
Ended up playing 3 Sydcon games and 2 full games, 1 mini game and 2 half games at Conclave.
They both had their charms.
As most of you know, with me and Blink egging him on Riley hurt an awful lot of people at the mini game (clan meeting) I enjoyed their pain, only peripherally seeing far too much pasty white jiggling. Two people where so pained they left. the rest just grit their teeth and waited silently for it to go away, then soldiered on.
The rest of vampire was fairly average. I ran about doing things that were neither very dull nor very interesting.
I left the werewolf game early due to exhaustion. From what I have heard I missed little.
I also left the Mage game early, since I wanted to go back to Sydcon to chat/paw through Joes junk/ end up at the right after party.
Sydconwise-
Mummers Play was decent, bad french accents thrown at me from all directions, and me bumbling round like a dottering old fool who turned out to have the "stone cold killer" trait.
Super troopers 2 was just as good as #1. flipping around being unnecessarily violent/abusive/silly at our problems, and blowing stuff up (including the droid, who was not at all happy about that suggestion).
A colder war was fun as always. like the last one, no one trusts anyone who spells doktor with a K, despite the fact that I was largely benevolent. My peaceful medical ship got attacked, and we responded with the only weapon on board, which blew up the earth and all spaceships that hadn't managed to flee in horror. My character got whole body cancer for doing it, but what good is the most advanced medical vessel in the universe if it cant protect you from that, so I am now a psychic nazi brain in a jar- Leutnant Dr Franz "Earthbane" Detweiler. Poor Earth.
Today Im off work for a hand therapy visit.

Purgatory

So today was my first day of "light duties" as part of workcover sliding me back into my job.

The doctor in some insane moment of creativity sent work the workcover medical form informing my bosses that I was only allowed to do simple office tasks, and must where a splint at all times (like I would take it off).
I work in a Lab. Admin is a separate section to us, and neither want nor need help.
This causes the boss some difficulty in finding things for me to do.
The paper work in the Lab is basically a fill it in while your working affair, then type it into the spreadsheets on the computer when you have a free moment. We really have no need of a specific clerical duty. whenever someone felt lazy they would pass a torn out notebook page of data at me and say put that on the forms and then the computer system would you? This pretty much covers potential clerical work. Of course some of the guys had seen this coming, and had slacked off on the paperwork, so there'd be a big backlog to do they could throw at me in the morning.

I now have a deep respect for anyone who can actually do data entry jobs.
By 9am (I start at 7:30am) I was near-comatose with boredom. The boss noticed and asked if I had trouble sleeping due to pain. My brain screamed "NO THIS WORK IS JUST SOUL DESTROYINGLY BORING" but my mouth happily replied that no, I sleep fine, but the antibiotics and pain killers (which I am not really on anymore) tend to make me drowsy of a morning. thank heavans for subconscious filters.
After getting through the data backlog (what your finished already? the boss groans not because I did it quickly, which I didn't, but because now I need to be given another task), I got the joy of folding filter paper into cones and placing them into a dispenser, thus saving everyone else the precious seconds it takes to fold a single piece as required.
For those of you who don't know, this means I spent 2.5 hours
1) pick up circle of paper
2) neatly fold circle of paper in half
3) Unfold then fold in half perpendicular to the first fold, but with the inside of the crease on the opposite side of the paper to the first crease
4) Squash fold one half of the semi circle, pushing each side of the fold back against the remaining quarter circle (if you don't know what a squash fold is, see any beginers guide to origami)
5) pop open the cone.
Repeat.
This takes about ten seconds.

At around ten minutes in, showtunes started playing mysteriously in my head.
at somewhere nearer to the one hour mark, I noticed these sounds were just masking the deeper madness, somewhere deep inside me skinner's voice was saying " see how many you can do in ten minutes, then try to break that record" And I was appaled to discover I had been doing this for at least the last twenty five minutes, unwittingly. I crushed the current filter paper in impotent rage, then went to have a coffee.

The Lady in charge of training is off until monday, so hopefully then I'll get something mildly less boring to do (I never thought I'd long for site inductions)

This part of the accident is so much worse than the actual injury.
and it's going to last a month.
I hope I make it.

no not like that, get your minds out of the gutter.

as many of you know, I suffered a workplace injury on friday, crushing and severing one of my fingers. It has now been reattached and wires put in the bones, though full results of the surgery are as yet unclear.
So for the next six weeks I am left handed. the pain killers work ok, so I am doing fairly alright, though i hear i missed much during my hospital stay.
ottherwise everything proceeds adequately.
until we try to settle the workcover issue.

I've done a fair amount of drinking these last few days.
Folks were round my place on friday. much drinking, people playing guitar hero far too seriously, dodgy background music and snarky commentarys.
yesterday was heaph's birthday party. it was pretty fun. I may have been a bad friend a fair bit there, being as usual a little acidic and snarky, a trait I'm told only improves as I drink. It was exceptional fun. As so often happens to me when I drink, I almost didn't end up going home, but when pack up time came, I went out trying to help Toph find Hayden. failing to see him I asked the barstaff if they noticed which way he went. He rather tactfully suggested that it might be better if one of my less inebriated friends went looking. Surprised I stood around for a while trying to analyze my state of inebriation and discovering i was a fair bit tipsy, so when Harvey came up and said we've got a taxi, i followed him out, and went home, since it seemed a choice I'd be more likely to support sober. Rude perhaps, but really how often does that stop me.

I think I may have to pay attention to my states of sobriety again. much as I hate introspection, it will probably be helpful.

tonight i'm off out west for some more partying (four days running now).
hurray for large crowds.
and boozamahol.
and good food.

Indulgence is fun.

And now I sit in Darkness

Well not right now, but in general I do (well... could. but won't).

There is no light in my room.

the recent storms caused water damage to my light fittings resulting in an unsettling crackling noise even when the light was off -off being a relative state marked only by the lightswitch, as up or down the globe remained lit- I had to remove the bulb entirely last night. now the electrician has come by, noted the problem and removed the light fitting entirely.
he is going to call the landlord about the need for a replacement light fitting, and I should expect it in a few buisness days. Until then, my room is unlit.
darkness prevails.
I am not used to requesting more light. its odd. but I needs it.

I needs it!

In other news-
Im behind the SGC for Clix!
those jerks have alan scott's and guardian of the galaxy's and cassie someoneorother's
I was leading the pack for sooo long there. Still no word about starro either

I have recomenced clix-moding. however the competition is even more vexing. Whereas before I only failed to compare to Brendan's Wonderful work I now also fail to compare with Herbie, who is far artier than is really healthy, and thus much better at this kind of thing than I am.

Pancake fest was, as everyone else has already said- wonderful.

Finally received a cam app for a non-bandmate. I feel less dodgy already.

Prepping Ideas for Heaph's supers game- noticed myself writing over a page on the not-at-all rational-science behind the superhero(s) before I got to even mentioning the hero(es) and then not a very full descriptive of the character. Currently I'm blaming that on not knowing enough of the campaign world to write as much about the character, but when it comes down to it, my completely stolen pseudoscience is unnecessary for the character bios. i just enjoy writing that crap (well plagiarizing it), and it was such ideas that spawned the ideas behind the Heroes. (Heaph you'll have the bios in your inbox by day's end, pick the one you like the most).

Man I need to clean my room. Its seriously messed up.

One of these days i'll buy a closet. I promise.

Got rid of the last of my Clout. Fie on those who derided it- it was useful, I may get more.

things

ha! ha!
after last years effort, going a month without posting feels a little odd
Nothing really to report on life. Things basically progress as normal.
Getting quite bored though and may soon become employed.

In future events
just before the big wedding this weekend (Soon Heaph'll be guilty of Spousal Abuse rather than regular abuse) I have agreed to do some serious boardgaming.
Chatting with Party Leader and Cap'n Dave has told me that UNSW Gameplayers are running three wednesday games, but are dying on Fridays. So this friday night at UNSW it'll be a board game bonanza! all people are welcome, old members, current members, never-members, basically anyone up for sitting around and playing card/board games on a friday night.
Fun will be had by all.
ALL DAMN IT! ALL!!!!!!!

now I've got to go get my suit all figured out for the weekend.

canberra= bizarroland

I think everyone already knew that, but it bears repeating.

As many already know, I tripped down to bizarroland over the long weekend to go to cancon.

the con was quite fun, I played a lot of clix and looked at some random stuff.

final con stats
11 clix games - 6 wins, 5 losses
2 Clout games - 2 losses.

Final con loot + free stuff

56 Heroclix LE's - 35 new LE's and 25 doubles (which will likely make their way into the tinny prize pool). they were handing out LE's like they were candy.

5 Mechclix - which I gave to lord_smeg

1 Crimson Skies fighter plane

2 starter sets of clout, and a lot of additional clout.

Two Card Boxes.

A new CD- Yu-Gi-Oh, Music To Duel By.

A book of DragonBall Z stuff, posters children's art, stats about the card game, etc.

A magic the gathering T-shirt, and A dragonball z championship t-shirt

A collection of trainer badges for pokemon, a couple each for Kin Island, Chrono Island and Trainer Tower. plus some Yu-Gi-Oh badges.

a small pile of card games I don't play, including yu yu hakusho, pokemon, one piece, Yu-Gi-Oh, dragonball Z, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lone Star Drifter, Dragon Booster, Myths and Legends, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the crowning glory - The saddle club Trading Card Game.
The saddle club already has a new owner planned out for it, but if anyone else wants some free random cards or badges, just come and ask me for them.

In other canberra related news- Had Drinks to celebrate Matt Archer's birthday, everyone but Matt who was there had come down from Sydney.
Driving around in canberra is odd.
1/4P parking in the city? 5 minute only parking? how useless is that!
caught the canberra disease as did phalnax.
This is my excuse for not posting right after the trip.
